{"id":211,"date":"2019-05-28T00:07:29","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T00:07:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ims-online.com\/?p=211"},"modified":"2019-05-28T00:07:30","modified_gmt":"2019-05-28T00:07:30","slug":"slay-the-monster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.ims-online.com\/index.php\/2019\/05\/28\/slay-the-monster\/","title":{"rendered":"SLAY THE MONSTER"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It begins simple\nenough.&nbsp; You have a mountain you dream of climbing.&nbsp; It might be\nclimbing an actual mountain, writing a book, changing careers, or maybe going\nto graduate school \u2013 who knows.&nbsp; The goal seems possible, but terribly\nchallenging.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The weight of the goal makes you hesitate.&nbsp;<\/strong> You delay. &nbsp;The monster is born.&nbsp; It dwells under your bed, watching you, waiting for the opportunity to maul your dreams.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your life continues and to\nthe typical observer, all is well, but you know better.&nbsp; The monster\nbreathes so loud, you can\u2019t ignore it.&nbsp; You try to deal with it by saying\nthat soon you\u2019ll be ready to commit to the goal.&nbsp; As soon as you finish\nthat one thing!&nbsp; It becomes clear you\u2019re just delaying.&nbsp; The monster\ncontinues to grow.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The noise under the bed\ncripples your ability to sleep.&nbsp; Fine!&nbsp; You get up in the middle of\nthe night and resolve to get it done.&nbsp; You write the first draft of the\nfirst chapter or fill out the first few applications for graduate school.&nbsp;\nThe monster falls silent, watching to see what you\u2019ll do.&nbsp; You feel\ntriumphant!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quickly life encroaches, and you lose focus.&nbsp;<\/strong> Every day at work there are endless fires to fight.&nbsp; At home, a family who rightfully needs your attention.&nbsp; You don\u2019t actually write chapter one, let alone a second or third chapter.&nbsp; The applications are never mailed.&nbsp; The monster howls, relishing its victory.&nbsp; It\u2019s mocking you.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is that in life\nit\u2019s far easier to make excuses, than to work extra hard for an extended period\nof time.&nbsp; Your choice:&nbsp; make excuses or make progress.&nbsp; The\ntrouble with excuses is that they are addicting.&nbsp; Like drugs, they are an\neasy answer.&nbsp; They might distract you, but they never solve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Here&#8217;s your call to action.&nbsp;  <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Realize that most of your constraints are imagined.&nbsp; They might pose a real challenge, but how you choose to view that challenge is entirely up to you.&nbsp; Whether or not the glass is half full is your call to make.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, realize that all big\naccomplishments are predicated on trying and failing.&nbsp; Any learning curve\nwill result in mistakes, setbacks, and screw-ups.&nbsp; That\u2019s just the natural\nprocess of learning.&nbsp; It\u2019s time to stop living in fear of other people\nknowing you\u2019ve failed or that you\u2019re imperfect.&nbsp; Wear your learning\nmoments like the badges of honor they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be honest \u2013 what kind of life do you want to live?&nbsp;<\/strong> When you\u2019re in your last year and looking back on life, how would you like to summarize the journey?&nbsp; There are two main choices.&nbsp; You can say, \u201cHey, I avoided risks, was always careful, and never really failed in any significant way.&nbsp; I survived.\u201d&nbsp; Or, you can say, \u201cI tried a lot of things.&nbsp; I enjoyed a few huge victories, and many defeats, but mostly I\u2019m just happy I tried to chase my dreams.&nbsp; I survived.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>What kind of survivor do you want to be? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how to arm yourself to\nslay the monster.&nbsp; It starts with team planning.&nbsp; If you have\nsignificant others, they need to know about your intentions, support you, and\naccept a plan moving forward that allows you to be dedicated to the goal\n(financially and logistically).&nbsp; Very often, it takes a team to propel you\nforward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you launch the plan,\nbe sure you don\u2019t try to re-invent the wheel.&nbsp; Use your network, a coach,\na mentor.&nbsp; Go find people who have done what you\u2019re dreaming of doing, or\nsomething similar.&nbsp; Ask them what they wish they would have known before\nthey began.&nbsp; Ask for their wisdom.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Plan for failure.&nbsp; <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If setbacks and mistakes are inevitable, plan for them.&nbsp; For example, when a difficult unexpected moment happens during the journey, it helps to have a go-to routine.&nbsp; Try some version of this:&nbsp; spend a little time alone, choose not to make fast rash decisions unless utterly necessary, say to yourself that you knew this would happen \u2013 that it\u2019s normal, and that it will fuel learning once you check the emotions and get focused on learning.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay.&nbsp; Now you\u2019re ready.&nbsp;<strong> It\u2019s time to slay the monster.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drdewett.com\">Dr. Dewett<\/a> is one of the world\u2019s leading leadership personalities.
