{"id":313,"date":"2019-08-19T02:02:34","date_gmt":"2019-08-19T02:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.ims-online.com\/?p=313"},"modified":"2019-08-19T02:02:35","modified_gmt":"2019-08-19T02:02:35","slug":"team-in-harmony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.ims-online.com\/index.php\/2019\/08\/19\/team-in-harmony\/","title":{"rendered":"HOW TO GET YOUR TEAM PLAYING IN HARMONY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you saw\nthe 2014 movie \u201cWhiplash,\u201d you\u2019ll surely remember Terence Fletcher (played by\nJ.K. Simmons), the tyrannical jazz band leader fond of profanity and\nhumiliating his young musicians.&nbsp; The\nfilm would have you believe this approach to teaching yields great performance,\nbut that hasn\u2019t been my experience.&nbsp; As a\nprofessional musician for almost 35 years, I can report with confidence that the\nbest music teachers I\u2019ve had took the <em>opposite<\/em>\ntack.&nbsp; They created harmony not by\nscreaming at and berating their students but by inspiring them to get\nbetter.&nbsp; They set a clear example of how\nto achieve success, provided clear and honest feedback, and continually\nchallenged them to improve week by week, month by month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same\nholds true in organizations.&nbsp; You\u2019ve probably\ninvested a significant amount of time and money finding the right employees,\nbut to enable them to achieve peak performance, don\u2019t follow the Fletcher\nmodel.&nbsp; Create team harmony the same way\nmy best music teachers did.&nbsp; Start with\nthese 5 simple but powerful ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>COMMUNICATE CLEARLY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of my\nclients complain about having to sift through mountains of messages when only a\nfew are really important\u2014and they have every right to be frustrated.&nbsp; So be purposeful and methodical in the way\nyou communicate: think <em>brevity<\/em>, <em>clarity<\/em>, and <em>specificity<\/em> in everything you say and write.&nbsp; Vague or contradictory messages cause\nconfusion and consume valuable time to interpret.&nbsp; Be crystal-clear in both your written and\nspoken communication and you\u2019ll save yourself and your colleagues a lot of\naggravation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>SHARE GENEROUSLY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine if\nmy music teachers had withheld their knowledge from me.&nbsp; My lessons would have been short and\npointless!&nbsp; Be generous in how you share <em>your<\/em> experiences, wisdom, and\nsuggestions with your team, not in a patronizing, \u201clook-how-great-I-am\u201d way but\nin a manner intended to help them excel.&nbsp;\nThe great producer and musician Quincy Jones once said, \u201cImagine what a\nharmonious world it could be if every single person, young and old, shared just\na little of what he [or she] is good at doing.\u201d&nbsp;\nHe\u2019s right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>FOSTER ACCOUNTABILITY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Make\naccountability a key value of your team not through fear but through setting\nhigh expectations.&nbsp; When I didn\u2019t\npractice properly for an upcoming lesson, my music teachers didn\u2019t lose their\ntemper.&nbsp; They expressed disappointment\nand told me I could do better.&nbsp; That was\na much more powerful way to get me to practice than yelling like Fletcher.&nbsp; Similarly, accountable cultures develop when\nleaders exhibit confidence in their people and not through fear and\nintimidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>EMPOWER OTHERS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Empower\nemployees to take initiative and solve problems on their own.&nbsp; Most employees, especially Millennials, want\nthe freedom to be creative, take calculated risks, and try new things.&nbsp; You need to be prepared to encourage this\nbehavior.&nbsp; This doesn\u2019t mean allowing\nconduct that is inconsistent with organizational values and goals but rather\nencouraging autonomy, demonstrating confidence in their abilities, and\nproviding coaching when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>PROVIDE RECOGNITION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Few things\nfeel as good as receiving recognition for a job well done, yet many employees\nhardly ever hear it.&nbsp; A thoughtful \u201cGreat\njob!\u201d or \u201cSuper presentation!\u201d can go a long way toward elevating engagement\nand morale. &nbsp;Had my teachers shared only\ncriticism with me without recognizing my efforts, I likely would have stopped\nplaying music altogether.&nbsp; When they know\ntheir efforts are appreciated, your employees will want to continue down the\npath of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Achieving\nsuccess as a musician is rooted in finding players who not only want to make\nthe entire <em>group<\/em> sound good but each <em>individual<\/em> <em>player<\/em> as well.&nbsp; It\u2019s the\nsame with teams.&nbsp; That\u2019s why leaders need\nto make sure their people are inspired and well-prepared every day to meet the demands\nthey face.&nbsp; It\u2019s not easy, and leadership\nisn\u2019t for everybody.&nbsp;
