No single set of skills and\ntechniques will help you sustain and improve your team, organization, or even\ncareer more than anticipation. Most leaders have never taken a course or\nseminar on the subject. It wasn\u2019t in the required curriculum for your\nuniversity major, was it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effective anticipation sees not\njust the obvious that\u2019s ahead but also the hidden, the hinted-at, the possible.\nThe process need not be complicated. But it must be persistent. I urge you to\nadopt the approaches I list here. Habits of anticipation will stand you in good\nstead for your entire career, for your entire life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is a \u201cstarter kit\u201d for\nanticipation. Things to do, ways to think, and habits to adopt that allow you\nto see developments before they arrive, avoid nasty surprises, and take\nadvantage of opportunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Widen and Lengthen Your View<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most successful business\nleaders keep themselves informed. They see media, listen to viewpoints, mine\npromising sources, and collect forward-looking contacts that see ahead. They\nleverage time saving summaries, look at sources with a future focus, and employ\ntechnology to push information their way. They team with peers and associates\nto compare notes, discover unusual insights, and gain novel perspective. They\nchange up their sources and network to cast a wider net for signals of what\u2019s\nahead. Nothing goes over their head. They allow their curiosity to drive a\ncontinuous alertness to signals of the future. I list two excellent free daily\nresources at the end of this posting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

See the Significant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m often asked, \u201cWhat should I\npay attention to? There\u2019s so much reading and information I\u2019ve got to see\nalready.\u201d Recognize information that will have the strongest impact on your\nfuture from three simple categories: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Be surprised. A surprise is new information, a\ndeparture from your current understanding, and probably a signal of something\nto come you should be monitoring.<\/li>
  2. Determine \u201cgame-changers.\u201d Keep an open mind but\nbe honest with yourself about factors, forces, and innovations that could\nchange everything. Robotics, artificial intelligence, generational change, and social\nadoptions are appropriate current examples. Don\u2019t hunker down in denial. Here\nis an opportunity to adapt, ally, or move in a new direction.<\/li>
  3. Notice what has strong implications. An\nimplication is a consequence, result, impact, upshot, or ripple effect. A\ndevelopment with high-impact implications is a blip on your radar. Your mind\nshould jump to the question, \u201cSince that\u2019s happened (or will happen) then\nwhat?\u201d Your brain will think like a futurist to create a range, a cascade of\nafter-effects. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Analyze Impacts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Many of my clients organize\nimplications into systems and patterns. One quick technique you can try is to\nwrite a trigger event, situation, or scenario in the middle of a blank sheet.\nThen ask the \u201cthen what?\u201d question and write 3-5 impacts down in a circle\naround the trigger. Then go to each of the those implications you recorded and\nask \u201cthen what?\u201d of each of those, generating 2-3 more implications. By the\ntime you reach the third level you\u2019ll see entries and patterns that are actions\nand strategies for how to move into the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Of course this process is even\nbetter when done in a small group as we do in IMS learning experiences. The\naddition of other viewpoints and experiences causes you to include a wider\nrange of possibilities. You\u2019ll find your teammates bring perspectives you would\nnot have developed on your own. This also allows you some time to contemplate\nwhat\u2019s coming. The \u201cimplication wheels\u201d you generate are insightful, full of\nspecifics, and prompt you to use the next portion of the took-kit below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pull the Trigger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Anticipation leads to a forecast.\nForecasts are valuable insights and knowledge of future events. But scanning,\nthinking, and analysis is useless unless it leads to action. Doing something\nthat protects, leverages an advantage, opens a new avenue, or puts a proactive\nplan in place is what seeing around the corner should accomplish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Those are four components of an\nanticipation system. Widen-broaden your view. Recognize the signals both\nobvious and less so. Analyze potential impacts. Take action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
