You may have\na leadership title – or tremendous leadership potential — but do you look like\na leader? Influencing people\u2019s perception of you is called impression\nmanagement, and body language plays a key role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are five body language hacks that make you look like a\nleader:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Start With Your Posture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Try\nthis: Raise your shoulders toward your ears. Now roll them back. Now drop them\ndown. Keeping this erect posture with your shoulders back and your head straight\nmakes you look very sure of yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power and authority are nonverbally expressed by expanding\ninto height and space. When you want to project leadership presence at a\nmeeting, sit tall and claim your territory. Uncross your legs and place your\nfeet firmly on the floor. Bring your elbows away from your body and widen your\narm position. Your expanded body language will not only change the way people\nperceive you \u2013 it will influence the way you feel about yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you stand, be aware that if\nyour feet are close together, you can look hesitant or unsure. But when you\nwiden your stance, relax your knees, and center your weight in your lower body,\nyou look more \u201csolid\u201d and credible.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Make Sure You\u2019re Present<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An\nup-and-coming manager was being groomed for a leadership position, but after\nattending a staff meeting, her boss took her aside. \u201cNever do that again,\u201d he\nsaid. \u201cYou didn\u2019t look like you were fully present<\/em>.\nYou didn\u2019t make eye contact with the speaker, you didn\u2019t join the discussion,\nand you certainly didn\u2019t look like a leader.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her boss made a valid point. You can\u2019t\nproject leadership presence if you aren\u2019t perceived as being present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At every meeting you attend, make sure you stay engaged by\nactively participating, making eye contact with, and orienting your body toward,\nwhomever is speaking, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Use Gestures That Signal Leadership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Leadership presence is enhanced by using smooth, controlled\ngestures between your waist and your shoulders. Warmth and openness are\ndemonstrated by rotating hands with palms up at about a 45-degree angle, a way\nof indicating that you have nothing to hide. \nMoving your hands\nand arms away from the front of your torso is another way of indicating\nsincerity and security. The more you cover your body with folded arms or\ntightly-held hands, the more it appears you need to protect or defend yourself.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authority is shown by rotating your hands palms-down, a\nnonverbal way of saying, \u201cHold that thought.\u201d The steeple gesture (where the tips of your fingers\ntouch, but your palms are separated) is a sign that you\u2019re sure of what you\u2019re\nsaying. As such, it can be very effective when you want to emphasize a certain\npoint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gestures to\navoid include the \u201cfig leaf.\u201d Most people unconsciously clasp their hands in\nfront of their lower body, creating a protective fig leaf effect. Whenever you\nuse this gesture, especially during a formal presentation, it indicates that\nyou’re insecure or uncomfortable. A better choice would be to clasp your hands\nat waist level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gestures are a key\npart of how people perceive you. Using a variety of gestures helps you connect\nwith your audience. You\u2019re more compelling and convincing when you talk with\nyour hands – as long as you know what they are saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Sound Like a Leader<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As a leader you can be sure that people will not only be listening\nto your words, they\u2019ll be evaluating how<\/em>\nyou say what you say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking\nloudly and quickly makes you sound confident \u2013 unless, of course, you are\nshouting, which makes you seem rude and insensitive. Speaking softly can be\neffective for signaling a confidential or very important message. But always\nmake sure you are speaking with enough volume to be heard. And remember to\nenunciate and speak clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put enough emotion in your\nvoice to avoid a monotone delivery that sounds as if you\u2019re bored or detached.\nI\u2019ve heard leaders praise people in such a flat tone of voice that none of the\nrecipients felt genuinely appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the way, when you\u2019re speaking, don\u2019t be concerned with filling every\nmoment with words. Instead, try pausing. It\u2019s unexpected, it\u2019s\nattention-getting, and it\u2019s effective . . . very effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Ace Your Business Handshake<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the\nworkplace, warmth and welcome are transmitted by shaking hands, and this\nseemingly simple greeting may be what someone remembers most about meeting you.\nThat\u2019s because touch is the most primitive and powerful nonverbal cue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be aware that\npeople are personality judgments based on the kind of handshake you have. A\nweak handshake may mark you as \u201ctoo timid for leadership.\u201d And the \u201cbone\ncrusher\u201d — where s person squeezes too tightly \u2013 almost always gives the\nimpression of being overbearing or insensitive. The perfect handshake is firm, with palm-to-palm contact, so that the web of you\nhand (the skin between your thumb and first finger) touches the web of the\nother person\u2019s hand. The more skin you can contact, the more you come across as\ntrustworthy and reliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember to offer\nyour hand with your palm facing sideways. If you extend your hand with the palm\nup, it makes you look submissive. When you hold out your hand with the palm\ndown, or if you twist your hand downward during the handshake, it sends the\nmessage that you feel superior. But when you offer your hand sideways, it sends\na message of equality and self-confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try these five body language hacks. You may be surprised to\nfind that these simple nonverbal cues can give a powerful boost your leadership\npresence by positively influencing the way others perceive you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
