{"id":394,"date":"2020-01-05T20:39:29","date_gmt":"2020-01-05T20:39:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.ims-online.com\/?p=394"},"modified":"2020-01-05T21:03:49","modified_gmt":"2020-01-05T21:03:49","slug":"build-lasting-relationships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.ims-online.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/05\/build-lasting-relationships\/","title":{"rendered":"3 NO-BRAINER KEYS TO LASTING RELATIONSHIPS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Some\ntime ago, John McGuirk said, <em>&#8220;The ability to form friendships, to make\npeople believe in you and trust you, is one of the few absolutely fundamental\nqualities of success.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nagree. If you&#8217;re trying to lead a company, build a team, sell to a client, or\nimprove your home life, you&#8217;ll have a lot more success if you know how to build\nrelationships with all those people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately,\nrelationships are not a matter of <strong>chance<\/strong>. They are a matter of <strong>choice<\/strong>.\nThey depend more on you than the other people. Here&#8217;s what you can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>1.\u00a0 Make Relationships a Priority.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\ntend to achieve your top priorities. So even though it may be hard to find the\ntime, you&#8217;ve got to make your personal and professional relationships a\npriority. If you don\u2019t, relationships tend to die\u2014just like businesses tend to\ndie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>2.\u00a0 Be a Giver.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Be\nkind without expecting kindness. Be giving without expecting appreciation in\nreturn. As the great Roman philosopher Seneca reminds us, <em>&#8220;There is no\ngrace in a benefit that sticks to the fingers.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quite\nsimply, when you give to others, more often than not they give their cooperation,\ntheir productivity, their business, and their loyalty in return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>3.\u00a0 Be Appreciative.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone\nhas qualities that can be appreciated. An old Arabic saying states that a real\nfriend is one who blows the chaff away and nourishes the seed which remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How\ntrue! Everyone has some chaff or some unlikable qualities. They&#8217;re not hard to\nsee. But when you are appreciative, you overlook the unlikable qualities&#8211;if\npossible and if appropriate&#8211;and recognize the good things you notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps\nno one said it better than TV star Donna Reed. As a youngster I used to watch\nher television show, a good, clean, upbeat family show. As an adult I remember\nher wisdom. Donna said, <em>&#8220;When you handle yourself, use your head. When\nyou handle others, use your heart.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>An Action Step. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Select two people with whom you want to build a stronger, deeper relationship. Then select two helpful things you could do for each of those individuals. Do those things without any expectation of a returned favor. You&#8217;ll be glad you did. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>About Dr. Alan Zimmerman<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the age of 7, Dr. Alan Zimmerman was selling greeting cards door-to-door.  By age 14 he owned a small international import business.  By age 21 he was teaching at the University of Minnesota, and during the next 15 years, he was selected as the Outstanding Faculty Member by two different universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At age 36, Alan had retired from teaching and opened his own speaking and training company. That position has allowed him to deliver more than 3000 programs, to more than a million people, in 49 states and 22 countries. The National Speakers Association has named him a Certified Speaking Professional and inducted him into the Speaker Hall of Fame, which places him in the top 1% of speakers worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Zimmerman will be speaking at IMS Boston on September 23, 2020.
